However, there are times that the court will schedule hearing and trials to be held at the Multnomah County East County Courthouse located at 18480 SW Stark Street, Portland, OR 97233, or the Juvenile Justice Center located at 1120 SW Third Ave., Portland, Oregon.

Currently there are ten judges in Multnomah County that are assigned to the Family Law Court and hear most of the family law matters cases. This includes the Chief Family Court Judge. These judges hear marital disputes, separate cases, spousal support modification case, child custody, parenting time and child support matters, and restraining orders pursuant to the Oregon Family Abuse Prevention Act. There are certain types of cases that require mandatory arbitration and these are assigned to arbitration as soon as the respondent files their response.

Each judicial court for each county within Oregon is able to create local rules to efficiently handle cases that come before them. These rules are tailored for the court and assist with effective resolution of each case and are known as the supplemental local rules. Specific to Multnomah County is mandatory mediation for cases involving children, identifying the judge assigned to the case in the heading of the pleading, when to appear at ex parte to present certain types of motions, how to motion to change a judge assigned to the case, and when and how to present proposed orders, to name a few. One important change to these rules that went into effect on in January of 2016 is that all dissolution of marriage cases are required to participate in some form of mediation before trial on the merits of case. Retaining an attorney will make sure that all proper rules of the local court are followed.
